God working in you

Today, in class, Dr. Foster talked about "dipping in" the Bible for inspiration and I truly believe that anyone can do this. When I am upset or just need inspiring I do that very thing. You just open up the Bible and start reading. Somehow just where I happen to open and start reading is exactly what I needed to read (maybe not what I wanted to read, but . . . ). As fast as you can derive inspiration from the text you can also find conviction. God speaks to us individually through the text according to our individual circumstances (which is what Dr. Foster also said in a round about way).

Donna, I do see the potential value in reading random Scripture and allowing it to speak to you. On the other hand, I do understand the dangers of trying to apply every piece of Scripture to every topic. I prefer, however, to live with the tension between these two concerns. The solution to deal with the tension, in my mind, is to take a quasi-Neo-orthodox approach to the text. I see the inspiration of the Scripture coming to life when it provokes one to change one's life for the better or to draw closer to Christ, even if the specific text was not necessarily originally intended for such a purpose. Like a bad sermon producing good fruit, I believe the misapplied text might possibly, in some cases, increase the quality of one's Christian experience. After all, God is bigger than the book. Even so, I wouldn't recommend overusing the method.
